Description

Everbearing Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa), known in Italian as Fragola Rifiorente, is a popular fruiting plant prized for its sweet, juicy red strawberries and ability to produce multiple harvests throughout the growing season. Unlike traditional strawberry varieties that produce one main crop, everbearing strawberries can flower and fruit repeatedly under suitable conditions.

Perfect for fresh eating, desserts, smoothies, fruit salads, jams and homemade preserves, these delicious strawberries are an excellent addition to home gardens. Their compact growth makes them particularly suitable for containers, hanging baskets, raised beds and balconies.

🌱 Growing Instructions

☀️ Sunlight: Prefers 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Benefits from partial afternoon shade during Malta’s hottest summer months.

💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly during flowering and fruit development, preferably at the base of the plant.

🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Prefers slightly acidic soil with a pH of approximately 5.5–6.5.

🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 15°C–25°C. Excessive summer heat can reduce flowering and fruit production.

📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 25–30 cm between plants for healthy growth and good air circulation.

🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer suitable for strawberries during active growth, switching to a potassium-rich feed during flowering and fruiting. Follow product instructions.

✂️ Harvesting: Pick strawberries when fully red, ripe and fragrant. Harvest regularly to encourage continued production. Remove damaged leaves and excessive runners to help direct energy towards fruit development.

🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)

Best planting season: October to March, allowing plants to establish during cooler weather before spring fruiting.

Position: Sunny vegetable gardens, raised beds, hanging baskets or containers with fertile soil and good drainage. Provide afternoon shade during intense summer heat.

Companion plants: Chives, thyme, lettuce and borage.

Common issue: Grey mould and fruit rot can develop when strawberries remain wet or touch damp soil. Use straw mulch, maintain good air circulation and avoid wetting the fruits when watering.
