Description
Common Sage (Salvia officinalis), known in Italian as Salvia Comune, is a hardy, aromatic Mediterranean herb prized for its soft, grey-green leaves and distinctive earthy fragrance. This evergreen perennial shrub produces attractive purple-blue flowers that attract bees and other beneficial pollinators.
Widely used in Mediterranean cooking, sage is perfect for seasoning roasted meats, poultry, stuffing, pasta dishes, sauces and roasted vegetables. Its fragrant foliage and compact, bushy growth make it an excellent choice for kitchen herb gardens, balconies and containers. Naturally suited to Malta’s Mediterranean climate, sage is both practical and ornamental.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Requires full sun, ideally 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Benefits from good air circulation during Malta’s hot summers.
💧 Watering: Water moderately, allowing the top layer of soil to dry between waterings. Established plants are drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods.
🌱 Soil: Plant in well-draining, sandy or loamy soil. Tolerates limestone-rich soils and dislikes waterlogged conditions.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 15°C–28°C. Tolerates Malta’s mild winters well but benefits from protection against prolonged excessive heat and humidity.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 40–50 cm between plants for healthy, bushy growth and good air circulation.
🌾 Fertilizer: Requires minimal feeding. Apply a light organic fertilizer once or twice during the growing season. Avoid excessive fertilization.
✂️ Harvesting: Pick individual leaves or snip tender stems as needed. Prune lightly after flowering to encourage compact growth, avoiding deep cuts into old, woody stems.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
