Plant Details
Botanical Name: Euphorbia leucodendron ‘Calima’
Common Name: Madagascar Stick Plant • Calima Euphorbia
Plant Type: Succulent
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
Growth Habit: Upright, branching, with slender cylindrical stems
Mature Size: Approximately 1–2 metres tall in containers; potentially larger in ideal outdoor conditions
Care Guide
☀️ Light:
Prefers very bright light with several hours of gentle direct sunlight. In Malta, gradually acclimatise plants to stronger sunlight and provide some protection from intense summer afternoon sun, particularly for young specimens.
💧 Watering:
Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during winter when growth slows. Avoid prolonged wet conditions, as the roots are susceptible to rot.
🌱 Soil:
Use a very free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added mineral grit, pumice or perlite to ensure excellent drainage.
🌡 Temperature:
Best grown between 15–30°C. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 10°C, especially when grown outdoors or in containers.
🌸 Flowering
Mature plants may produce small, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers (cyathia) near the tips of the stems during the growing season. Flowering is relatively uncommon in indoor specimens, which are primarily grown for their unusual architectural appearance.

Pet Safety: 🐾 Keep Out of Reach of Pets
Like other Euphorbia species, Euphorbia leucodendron produces a milky latex sap that is toxic and highly irritating. Contact can cause skin irritation and serious eye injury, while ingestion may cause digestive upset in people and pets. Keep away from children and animals, and wear gloves when handling damaged stems.
Good to Know
Despite its cactus-like appearance, Euphorbia leucodendron is not a cactus. It belongs to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) and stores moisture within its slender, succulent stems.
The species name leucodendron means “white tree”, referring to characteristics of the plant’s branching structure and appearance.
Its unusual growth habit makes it particularly attractive in minimalist and contemporary plant arrangements, where its slender stems create an elegant silhouette.
As the plant matures, it naturally develops additional branches, gradually forming a fuller, more sculptural specimen.
Always handle with care, as damaged stems release irritating milky sap.
