🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Prefers full sun, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
💧 Watering: Water regularly to keep soil lightly moist during active growth. Reduce watering as bulbs mature and stop once the foliage begins to dry.
🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with mature compost. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best in mild conditions between 13°C–24°C. Tolerates Malta’s mild winters well.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 10–15 cm between plants and 25–30 cm between rows for proper bulb development.
🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer during early growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen once bulbs begin developing.
✂️ Harvesting: Harvest when bulbs are fully developed and the leaves begin to yellow and fall over. Typically ready around 100–120 days after transplanting, depending on the variety and growing conditions.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
Best planting season: September to November, allowing bulbs to develop during the cooler months.
Position: Sunny vegetable gardens, raised beds or deep containers with good drainage.
Companion plants: Carrots, lettuce, beetroot and tomatoes.
Common issue: Excessive watering or poor drainage can cause bulb rot. Avoid overwatering, particularly as the onions approach maturity.
