Description
Common Name: Jade Plant • Money Plant
Crassula ovata, often sold under the name Crassula portulacea, is a classic succulent loved for its thick, glossy green leaves and attractive tree-like growth. As the plant matures, its fleshy stems gradually become woody and develop a beautifully branched structure, giving it the appearance of a miniature tree.
Easy to care for, drought tolerant and exceptionally long-lived, the Jade Plant is a wonderful choice for bright indoor spaces, balconies and sheltered patios. Its neat appearance and ability to tolerate occasional missed waterings have made it one of the most popular succulents for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.
Plant Details
Botanical Name: Crassula ovata
Also Known As: Crassula portulacea
Common Name: Jade Plant • Money Plant
Plant Type: Succulent
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
Growth Habit: Upright, branching and shrub-like
Mature Size: Approximately 1–2 m tall when mature, although container-grown plants can easily be maintained at a smaller size
Care Guide
☀️ Light:
Prefers plenty of bright light and several hours of gentle direct sunlight. In Malta, some protection from the strongest summer afternoon sun can help prevent scorching, particularly if the plant has previously been grown indoors.
💧 Watering:
Allow the compost to dry thoroughly between waterings, then water deeply and allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering considerably during winter when growth slows. Overwatering is one of the most common problems with Jade Plants.
🌱 Soil:
Use a free-draining cactus and succulent compost. Adding mineral grit, pumice or perlite will improve drainage and help protect the roots from excess moisture.
🌡 Temperature:
Thrives in warm conditions and handles Malta’s summer heat well when properly acclimatised. Protect from frost and prolonged cold, particularly when grown outdoors during winter.
Flowering
Mature, well-established Jade Plants can produce clusters of small, star-shaped white to pale pink flowers, usually during the cooler months. Plenty of light and a natural period of cooler, drier conditions can help encourage flowering.

Good to Know
The Jade Plant is traditionally associated with prosperity, good fortune and friendship, which has helped earn it the popular name “Money Plant”. Its longevity also means that well-cared-for specimens can become impressive plants that are kept for decades.
Its thick leaves store water, allowing the plant to cope with dry periods far better than consistently wet compost. When in doubt about watering, it is generally safer to wait a little longer rather than water too frequently.
The plant also responds well to pruning, making it possible to encourage a compact, heavily branched shape or even train older specimens into a bonsai-like form.
Please Note: As a living plant, each specimen is unique. Height, branching, leaf size and colour may vary depending on age, season and growing conditions. Leaves may develop attractive reddish margins when exposed to brighter light.
