☀️ Light
Full Sun. This plant is an Australian native and loves the heat. To get those vibrant red “brushes,” it needs at least 6–8 hours of direct Maltese sun. If planted in the shade, it will become leggy and the flower production will be poor.

💧 Watering
Moderate. While very drought-tolerant once established in the ground, it performs best with regular watering.
In Pots: Never let the root ball dry out completely. If the soil becomes bone-dry, the needle-like leaves will turn gray and drop.
The Malta Tip: It can handle our tap water’s lime content reasonably well, but it prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
It has narrow, lance-shaped leaves that are a beautiful grayish-green. ‘Red Star’ is a dwarf to medium-sized shrub, typically reaching about 1.5 to 2 meters. It is evergreen, providing a dense screen all year round.

🪴 Potting Mix
Well-draining. It is quite adaptable to the rocky, alkaline soil of Malta. If planting in a pot, use a high-quality Mediterranean potting mix and add a little bit of volcanic sand or perlite to ensure the water doesn’t sit around the roots.

🌿 Fertilizer
Low Phosphorous. Australian plants can be sensitive to high phosphorous. Use a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Avoid heavy “Bloom Boosters” unless they are specifically safe for Proteas or Banksias.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Safe! Callistemon is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and even horses. It is a great choice for a pet-friendly garden.
