Description
English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), known in Italian as Lavanda Vera, is a beautiful, aromatic Mediterranean shrub prized for its narrow, silvery-green leaves and fragrant purple-blue flowers. This evergreen perennial produces elegant flower spikes that attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.
Widely appreciated for its relaxing fragrance, lavender is perfect for ornamental gardens, borders, decorative pots, dried flower arrangements and scented sachets. Its flowers can also be used in culinary preparations when grown without unsuitable chemical treatments. With proper care and excellent drainage, lavender makes an attractive addition to Malta’s Mediterranean gardens.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Requires full sun, ideally 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Provide good air circulation and avoid excessively sheltered, humid positions.
💧 Watering: Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Established plants are drought-tolerant, but potted lavender requires more frequent watering during Malta’s hot summers.
🌱 Soil: Plant in well-draining, sandy or gritty soil. Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline conditions and dislikes heavy, waterlogged soil.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 15°C–25°C. Tolerates cool winter conditions but may struggle with Malta’s intense summer heat and humidity.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 40–60 cm between plants for healthy growth and good air circulation.
🌾 Fertilizer: Requires minimal feeding. Apply a light, balanced fertilizer in spring if necessary. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages soft growth and fewer flowers.
✂️ Pruning: Remove faded flower spikes and lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact, bushy shape. Avoid cutting deeply into old, woody stems.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
Best planting season: October to March, allowing roots to establish before the intense summer heat.
Position: Sunny balconies, terraces, raised beds or containers with excellent drainage and good air circulation.
Companion plants: Rosemary, thyme, sage and oregano.
Common issue: Root rot and summer dieback caused by excessive moisture, high humidity or poorly draining soil. Avoid overwatering and ensure good airflow, particularly during Malta’s hottest months.
