Description
Fiocco White Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) is a vigorous, late-maturing cauliflower variety prized for its large, compact, snow-white heads and excellent productivity. This traditional winter-growing variety produces rounded heads surrounded by healthy green foliage, making it an excellent choice for home vegetable gardens.
With its tender texture and mild, slightly sweet flavour, Fiocco White Cauliflower is perfect for roasting, steaming, soups, cauliflower gratin and traditional Mediterranean recipes. Its long growing cycle makes it particularly suitable for Malta’s cooler winter months.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Prefers full sun, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering is essential for healthy growth and proper head development.
🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best in cool conditions, ideally between 10°C–20°C. Avoid excessive heat during head development.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 50–60 cm between plants for healthy growth and good air circulation.
🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth, following product instructions.
✂️ Harvesting: Harvest when the white head is firm, compact and fully developed, before the florets begin to separate. Typically ready approximately 150–180 days after transplanting.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
Best planting season: September to November, allowing plants to develop during Malta’s cooler months.
Position: Sunny vegetable gardens or raised beds with fertile soil, good drainage and sufficient growing space.
Companion plants: Lettuce, onions, celery and aromatic herbs.
Common issue: Cabbage caterpillars and aphids can damage leaves. Inspect plants regularly and use protective insect netting when necessary. Gently fold the outer leaves over developing heads to protect their white colour from strong sunlight.
