Description
Kalanchoe ‘Pink Butterflies’ is an unusual ornamental succulent prized for the masses of tiny pink plantlets that develop along the edges of its green leaves, creating its distinctive “butterfly” appearance. Its love of warmth and relatively dry conditions makes it well suited to Malta, where it can be grown in bright indoor spaces or sheltered outdoor positions.
💧 Watering
Water thoroughly, then allow the potting mix to dry well before watering again. As a succulent, Kalanchoe stores water in its leaves and is much more tolerant of dryness than constantly wet soil. During Malta’s hot summer months, check container plants more frequently, but always avoid waterlogging. Reduce watering considerably during winter.
☀️ Light
Grow in a very bright position with plenty of indirect light and some gentle direct sun. Morning or late-afternoon sunshine helps maintain strong growth and attractive pink colouring. In Malta, protect the plant from intense midday and afternoon summer sun, particularly behind glass, as excessive heat and sunlight can scorch the foliage.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This upright succulent produces narrow green leaves edged with numerous miniature pink plantlets, giving the impression of tiny butterflies resting along the foliage. The plantlets can eventually detach, although many lack sufficient chlorophyll to survive independently for long. Remove damaged growth as necessary and prune overly tall stems to encourage a more compact plant.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a very well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Adding perlite, pumice, or coarse grit will further improve drainage and help prevent root rot. Always grow in a container with adequate drainage holes.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed lightly every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer. Avoid excessive feeding, as Kalanchoe has relatively low nutrient requirements. Reduce or stop fertilizing during the cooler winter months.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Kalanchoe is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It contains cardiac glycosides that can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, and, in more serious cases, abnormal heart rhythms. Keep the plant and any fallen plantlets well out of reach of pets.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Kalanchoe ‘Pink Butterflies’ is primarily valued for its extraordinary ornamental foliage rather than for proven air-purifying properties. Like many succulents, it uses CAM photosynthesis, taking in much of its carbon dioxide at night, but it should not be relied upon as an indoor air-filtration method.
