Description
💧 Watering
Water regularly while the plant is establishing. Once mature, it becomes fairly drought-tolerant, although occasional deep watering during Malta’s hottest and driest summer periods will encourage healthier growth and better flowering. Allow the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings and avoid waterlogging.
☀️ Light
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. For the most abundant flowering, provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. It tolerates Malta’s strong summer sun well once established.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
A vigorous, fast-growing plant with glossy green foliage and clusters of orange to reddish-orange trumpet-shaped flowers. In Malta’s mild climate, flowering can continue for an extended period and may occur intermittently for much of the year. Prune after a major flowering flush to control its size, encourage bushier growth, and prevent it from becoming unruly.
🪴 Potting Mix
Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. It adapts to a range of soil types but dislikes prolonged waterlogging. When grown in containers, choose a large pot with good drainage to accommodate its vigorous root system.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring as active growth begins. A second light feeding during summer can support continued growth and flowering, particularly for container-grown plants. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage foliage at the expense of flowers.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety**
Cape Honeysuckle is generally regarded as non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, pets should still be discouraged from eating large quantities of any ornamental plant material.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Cape Honeysuckle is primarily an outdoor ornamental plant and is not recognised specifically for air-purifying qualities. Its nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
