Description
💧 Watering
Water moderately. Allow the top half of the soil to dry out completely between waterings. While it has excellent drought tolerance thanks to its fleshy stems, regular watering during hot Maltese summers keeps the leaves plump and vibrant. Be careful not to overwater, as soggy soil will quickly rot its delicate roots.
☀️ Light
It requires bright, indirect light to full sun. The more sunlight this plant gets, the deeper and more vibrant its purple coloration becomes. If kept in too much shade, the growth will stretch out and the leaves will fade to a dull, washed-out green.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It features a trailing or sprawling growth habit, with long, lance-shaped leaves that are naturally covered in fine, pale hairs. It grows very quickly, making it excellent for hanging baskets or spilling over retaining walls. Pinch back the growing tips regularly to encourage a bushier, denser shape.
🪴 Potting Mix
Thrives in a lightweight, rich, and well-draining potting soil. A standard indoor mix enhanced with a handful of perlite or coarse sand works perfectly. It adapts effortlessly to Malta’s alkaline conditions and is highly forgiving of varied soil quality, provided drainage is sharp.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed monthly during the spring and summer growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. No feeding is required during the winter months when its growth naturally slows down.
⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Mildly toxic to pets. The sap inside the fleshy stems can cause skin irritation or dermatitis in sensitive dogs and cats. If ingested in large quantities, it can lead to mild digestive upset and drooling, so it is best displayed out of reach in a hanging container.
🌬️ Air Purifying
An excellent indoor or terrace air purifier. It has been shown to be highly effective at filtering out common volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and household toxins, making it both a beautiful and health-conscious design choice.
