Description
💧 Watering
It prefers consistent moisture. During the peak of summer (July–August), plants in pots will likely need daily watering. In the ground, they are more resilient but still appreciate a deep soak twice a week. If the leaves start to wilt or drop, it’s usually a sign the soil has become too dry.
☀️ Light
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. In Malta, it performs best when it gets plenty of morning sun but is shielded from the most punishing “afternoon burn.” If it’s in too much shade, it will grow leggy and produce fewer of those heavenly scented flowers.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features dense, glossy, dark-green leaves that look polished year-round. It is a vigorous grower and can easily be pruned into a formal hedge, a topiary ball, or allowed to grow into a small, elegant tree (reaching 2–3 meters).
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a rich, well-draining soil. It doesn’t like “wet feet,” so ensure your potting mix contains perlite or grit. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil; since Malta’s water is very alkaline, adding a bit of peat or organic compost helps maintain the right balance.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the growing season (spring through autumn). To encourage more blooms, you can use a fertilizer slightly higher in phosphorus (like a rose or citrus feed) just as the weather starts to warm in March.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, it can produce small red berries after flowering; while not high-risk, it’s always best to discourage pets from snacking on garden fruit.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Primarily an outdoor or terrace plant. Its greatest “purifying” gift is its natural aromatherapy. A single Murraya on a balcony can perfume an entire apartment when the windows are open.
