Description
The Verbena is an exceptionally rewarding, fast-growing plant celebrated for its non-stop flowering performance. It produces dense, rounded clusters of small, star-shaped blossoms that create a vivid blanket of color in intense shades of purple, blue, vibrant pink, bright red, or crisp white all through the warm months.
💧 Watering
Water thoroughly when the top 3 centimeters of soil have dried out completely. While Verbena prefers consistent moisture to fuel its heavy blooming cycle, it is surprisingly drought-tolerant once established. Avoid constant waterlogging or overwatering at all costs, as soggy roots will quickly lead to root rot.
☀️ Light
It demands absolute full, direct sunlight to flower at its peak. It needs at least six to eight hours of blazing sun daily. If kept in too much shade, the stems will stretch out, growth will become sparse, and flower production will drastically drop. It handles intense Mediterranean heat beautifully.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Depending on the variety, Verbena grows in either a low-growing, spreading mat or a gracefully trailing habit, featuring small, textured, deep green leaves with serrated edges. Pro-maintenance tip: It is a high-energy bloomer. If the plant begins to look a bit tired or leggy mid-summer, trim the entire plant back by a third to instantly stimulate a fresh, bushy flush of new growth and flowers.
🪴 Potting Mix
Excellent drainage is essential. Use a high-quality, lightweight potting soil mixed with a generous handful of perlite or coarse sand. It adapts easily to a wide variety of soil qualities, including alkaline limestone soils, provided water can drain away quickly and freely.
🌿 Fertilizer
Because it pumps out continuous flowers from spring until the first cold snaps, Verbena is a moderately heavy feeder. Feed it every two weeks during the spring and summer growing season with a water-soluble liquid fertilizer balanced for flowering plants.
⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic to pets. Common garden Verbena varieties (Verbena x hybrida) contain compounds that can cause mild to moderate digestive upset, drooling, and vomiting if chewed on or swallowed by dogs and cats. It is best displayed safely in hanging baskets or raised window boxes out of their reach.
🌬️ Air Purifying
While it doesn’t process indoor chemical pollutants, its cascading flowers are highly attractive to biodiversity. It serves as an exceptional outdoor nectar source that eagerly draws helpful local bees, butterflies, and pollinators to sunny terraces and balconies.
