Description
💧 Watering
Blueberries have shallow roots and require consistently moist soil; never let them dry out completely, especially during a Maltese heatwave. Use rainwater or filtered water if possible, as the lime in Maltese tap water will eventually harm the plant.
☀️ Light
They prefer full sun to partial shade. In Malta, a spot that gets direct morning sun but is shielded from the blistering mid-afternoon heat is ideal to prevent the leaves and berries from shriveling.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This is a deciduous shrub that offers multi-season interest, featuring delicate white bell-shaped flowers in spring and fiery orange-red foliage in autumn. It has a neat, upright habit, making it a perfect “edible ornament” for a terrace.
🪴 Potting Mix
This is the most critical step: you must use an acidic (ericaceous) potting mix, as blueberries will not survive in standard Maltese soil. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage to keep the roots healthy.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed only with a specialized acid-loving (ericaceous) fertilizer during the growing season. Avoid standard fertilizers or manure, which can alter the soil pH and cause the leaves to turn yellow.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
The ‘Blue Dessert’ blueberry is non-toxic to dogs and cats. The berries are actually a healthy, antioxidant-packed treat for pets, provided they are given in moderation!
🌬️ Air Purifying
While not typically grown for air purification, its dense summer foliage contributes to oxygen production on balconies. As a fruit-bearing plant, it is also great for supporting local biodiversity by attracting pollinators.
