Palermitan Sprouting Broccoli – 12 Seedlings

Palermitan Sprouting Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica), known in Italian as Broccolo Sparacello Palermitano, is a traditional Sicilian vegetable variety prized for its vigorous growth and excellent productivity. Unlike conventional broccoli, it produces a smaller central head followed by numerous tender side shoots, allowing for multiple harvests throughout the growing season.

With its delicious, mild and slightly sweet flavour, Sparacello Broccoli is perfect for pasta dishes, soups, steaming and sautéing with garlic and olive oil. Particularly popular in Sicilian cuisine, this hardy variety is well suited to Mediterranean vegetable gardens.

🌱 Growing Instructions

☀️ Sunlight: Prefers full sun, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering encourages tender shoots and healthy growth.

🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.

🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 15°C–20°C. Cooler autumn and winter temperatures encourage healthy growth and tender florets.

📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 60–80 cm between plants to accommodate its vigorous, branching growth.

🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth, following product instructions.

✂️ Harvesting: Harvest the central head while the flower buds remain tightly closed. Continue picking the smaller side shoots as they develop to encourage repeated harvests. The first harvest typically occurs approximately 70–130 days after transplanting, depending on the selection and growing conditions.

🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)

Best planting season: September to November, allowing plants to establish during Malta’s cooler months. Earlier planting is possible with suitable heat protection and regular watering.

Position: Sunny vegetable gardens or raised beds with fertile soil, good drainage and plenty of growing space.

Companion plants: Lettuce, onions, celery and aromatic herbs.

Common issue: Cabbage caterpillars and aphids can damage leaves and developing shoots. Inspect plants regularly and use protective insect netting when necessary.
