Description

Schlumbergera, commonly known as Christmas Cactus or Holiday Cactus, is a tropical forest cactus loved for its arching green stems and colourful flowers in shades of pink, red, white, orange, or purple. Unlike desert cacti, it naturally prefers filtered light and slightly more moisture, making it an excellent indoor plant for Malta.

💧 Watering

Water when the top 2–3cm of the potting mix feels dry, then allow excess water to drain completely. During active growth and flowering, keep the soil lightly moist without becoming waterlogged. Reduce watering slightly after flowering and during slower growth periods. In Malta’s warm weather, check the soil regularly as smaller pots can dry quickly.

☀️ Light

Grow in bright, indirect light. Gentle morning or late-afternoon sun is suitable, but protect the plant from Malta’s intense midday and afternoon summer sun, which can scorch or redden the stems. During autumn, naturally shorter days and longer nights help stimulate flower-bud formation.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

Schlumbergera does not produce traditional leaves; its attractive green growth consists of flattened, segmented stems that gradually form a cascading plant. Flowers develop from the tips of mature segments, usually during the cooler months. Avoid repeatedly moving or rotating the plant once flower buds have formed, as sudden changes in conditions can contribute to bud drop.

🪴 Potting Mix

Use a light, airy, well-draining mix that retains some moisture. A combination of quality potting compost, fine orchid bark, and perlite works well. Unlike desert cacti, Schlumbergera appreciates some organic matter around its roots, but good drainage remains essential.

🌿 Fertilizer

Feed every 4–6 weeks during active growth with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Feeding can be reduced as flowering approaches and paused during periods of rest. Avoid excessive fertilizer, as accumulated salts can damage the roots.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Schlumbergera is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a good choice for pet-friendly homes. Eating a large quantity of the plant may still cause mild stomach upset, so excessive chewing should be discouraged.

🌬️ Air Purifying

Schlumbergera is primarily valued for its colourful seasonal flowers and attractive cascading growth rather than for proven air-purifying properties. Like many cacti, it uses CAM photosynthesis, but it should not be relied upon as a substitute for good indoor ventilation or air filtration.
