Description
Salix caprea ‘Kilmarnock’ is a charming deciduous ornamental tree admired for its graceful, weeping branches and soft, silvery catkins that appear in late winter and early spring. Its compact, umbrella-shaped form makes it an attractive feature for patios, small gardens and decorative containers.
💧 Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during Malta’s hot summers. Water deeply and regularly, as willows do not tolerate prolonged drought.
☀️ Light
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. In Malta, morning sun with some afternoon shade helps reduce heat stress.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Produces soft, silvery catkins before its green leaves emerge in spring. Its branches cascade downwards, creating a distinctive weeping shape. Loses its leaves in winter.
🪴 Potting Mix
Prefers fertile, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage. Add compost to help retain moisture, particularly in Malta’s dry conditions.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Keep away from cats and dogs. Willow contains salicylate compounds that may cause digestive upset or other harmful effects if significant amounts are ingested.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Primarily valued for its decorative weeping form and spring catkins, which provide an early food source for pollinators.
