Ruellia Brittoniana (Mexican Petunia)

Ruellia brittoniana, commonly known as Mexican Petunia and also botanically known as Ruellia simplex, is a vigorous flowering perennial with slender green foliage and attractive trumpet-shaped flowers, usually in shades of purple. Its excellent tolerance of heat makes it particularly well suited to Malta, where it can provide colour for much of the warmer part of the year.

💧 Watering
Water regularly while establishing, keeping the soil moderately moist without becoming waterlogged. Once established, Ruellia is fairly drought-tolerant, although occasional deep watering during Malta’s hottest and driest summer periods encourages healthier growth and better flowering. It can also tolerate wetter soil better than many Mediterranean garden plants.

☀️ Light
Grows best in full sun to partial shade. Around 6 hours of direct sunlight encourages dense growth and abundant flowering. It handles Malta’s strong summer sunshine well once established, although plants in partial shade can also perform well with somewhat fewer flowers.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

This fast-growing perennial forms upright stems with long, narrow green leaves and produces colourful trumpet-shaped flowers throughout the warmer months. Individual flowers are short-lived, but new blooms are produced continuously. Light pruning can control its size, encourage bushier growth, and remove untidy stems.

Ruellia can spread readily through underground rhizomes and self-seeding, so its growth should be monitored in garden beds. Growing it in containers is a useful option where its spread needs to be controlled.

🪴 Potting Mix
Ruellia is adaptable to different soil types but performs best in fertile, well-draining soil that retains some moisture. For containers, use a quality general-purpose potting mix with good drainage and choose a sufficiently large pot for its vigorous root system.

🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring as active growth begins. A second light feeding during summer can help maintain flowering, particularly for plants grown in containers. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage lush foliage at the expense of flowers.
