Description
Ruellia makoyana (Monkey Plant)
Ruellia makoyana, commonly known as the Monkey Plant, is an attractive tropical perennial valued for its velvety patterned foliage and delicate pink trumpet-shaped flowers. Its compact, spreading growth makes it an excellent choice for pots, hanging baskets, bright indoor spaces, and sheltered patios in Malta.
💧 Watering
Keep the potting mix lightly and consistently moist during the growing season, allowing the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings. During Malta’s hot summers, check container-grown plants frequently, but avoid waterlogging. Reduce watering during the cooler winter months.
☀️ Light
Grows best in bright, indirect light or partial shade. In Malta, gentle morning sun is suitable, but protect the plant from intense midday and afternoon summer sunlight, which can scorch or fade its delicate foliage.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This compact, spreading plant produces soft, oval leaves marked with attractive silvery-green patterns and contrasting veins, often with purple tones underneath. Pink to lilac trumpet-shaped flowers appear amongst the foliage during the warmer months. Pinching or lightly pruning the stems encourages fuller, bushier growth.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a fertile, well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming soggy. Adding perlite or fine orchid bark helps improve drainage and airflow around the roots.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
There is limited reliable information regarding the toxicity of Ruellia makoyana specifically to cats and dogs. As a precaution, it is best to keep the plant away from pets that are likely to chew or ingest the foliage.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Ruellia makoyana is primarily valued for its decorative foliage and flowers rather than for proven air-purifying properties. Its lush growth and attractive colouring make it a beautiful addition to indoor spaces and sheltered outdoor displays.
