Description
☀️ Light
Full Sun to Partial Shade. In Malta, it performs best in full sun, which rewards you with a massive explosion of pink flowers. It can handle partial shade, but the growth will be less dense and you’ll get fewer blooms.
💧 Watering
Moderate to Low. Once established in the ground, it is quite drought-tolerant.
In Pots: Water when the top 3-4cm of soil is dry.
The Malta Tip: During a dry “Sirocco” wind, keep an eye on it—even though it’s tough, the flowers can wilt if the soil goes bone-dry for too long.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It is an evergreen with leathery, serrated, dark green leaves. The ‘Springtime’ variety is famous for its clusters of star-shaped, clear pink flowers that cover the plant in late winter and spring, followed by small dark berries. It grows into a compact mound about 1–1.5 meters tall.
🪴 Potting Mix
Adaptable but needs drainage. It loves the slightly alkaline, limestone-heavy soil of Malta. If planting in a pot, a standard Mediterranean potting mix with a bit of extra grit or perlite is perfect.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced slow-release fertilizer once in early spring (after the first big bloom) and once in early autumn. This keeps the foliage a deep, healthy green.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Generally Safe. Unlike many other flowering shrubs, the Indian Hawthorn is not considered toxic to cats or dogs. However, the berries can cause mild stomach upset if eaten in large quantities.
