Description

Raspberry ‘Sansone’ (Rubus idaeus ‘Sansone’) is a productive raspberry variety grown for its juicy, flavourful red berries. In Malta, it will benefit from consistent moisture, a cool root zone, and some protection from the most intense summer heat.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist during active growth, flowering, and fruit development, but never waterlogged. Raspberries have shallow root systems and can suffer quickly when the soil becomes excessively dry.

During Malta’s hot, dry spring and summer months, water deeply and regularly. Applying a generous layer of organic mulch around the root zone is highly recommended to reduce moisture loss and help keep the roots cooler.

☀️ Light

Grow in full sun to partial shade. Plenty of light encourages flowering and good fruit development, but under Maltese conditions a position receiving morning sun with some protection from intense afternoon summer heat is preferable.

Good airflow around the canes is also beneficial and helps maintain healthy foliage.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

‘Sansone’ develops upright to arching deciduous canes with green compound leaves, followed by flowers and clusters of red raspberries. A trellis, wires, or another support will help keep the canes organised and make harvesting easier.

Remove dead, weak, or damaged growth as required. Canes that have finished fruiting and naturally begin to decline can be removed at the base, allowing healthy new canes to develop for future crops.

🪴 Potting Mix

Plant in fertile, organic-rich, well-draining soil that retains consistent moisture. Incorporating compost or well-rotted organic matter will improve soil structure and help protect the roots from drying excessively.

For container cultivation, choose a large pot with generous drainage holes and use a high-quality potting mix suitable for soft fruit. Mulching the surface is especially useful during Malta’s summer.

🌿 Fertilizer

Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted compost as active growth begins. A fertilizer formulated for fruiting plants can be used during the growing season to support flowering and berry development.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous leafy growth at the expense of flowers and fruit.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Raspberries are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, and ripe raspberry fruits are not considered poisonous. Large quantities of fruit may still cause digestive upset. Raspberry canes can also carry prickles, so pets should be discouraged from pushing through dense growth.

🌬️ Air Purifying

Raspberry ‘Sansone’ is primarily valued as an edible fruiting plant rather than for specific air-purifying properties. Its flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees and other beneficial insects, making it a useful addition to edible and pollinator-friendly gardens.
