Description
Prunus domestica is a deciduous fruit tree admired for its delicate white spring blossoms and delicious, juicy plums. A lovely addition to fruit gardens, it provides seasonal beauty and homegrown fruit.
💧 Watering
Water regularly while establishing. Deep watering is important during Malta’s hot summers, especially during fruit development.
☀️ Light
Thrives in full sun, ideally receiving 6–8 hours daily. Choose a sheltered position with good airflow.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Produces green leaves, white spring flowers and edible plums in summer. Loses its leaves in winter. Fruit production depends on the variety, winter chilling and pollination.
🪴 Potting Mix
Prefers fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced fruit tree fertilizer in early spring. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth over fruiting.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Plum pits, leaves and stems are toxic to cats and dogs. They contain compounds that can release cyanide when chewed. Ripe plum flesh without the stone is generally safe in small amounts.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Primarily valued for its edible fruit, spring blossoms and ornamental appeal rather than specific air-purifying properties.
