Description
Chamomile (Camomilla) – Plant
Chamomile is a delicate, aromatic herb loved for its small, daisy-like flowers with white petals and golden-yellow centres. Its finely divided, feathery green foliage gives the plant a soft, attractive appearance, while its flowers release a gentle, sweet, apple-like fragrance.
Best known for its use in herbal teas, chamomile flowers can be harvested and dried to prepare a soothing, caffeine-free infusion. The plant is also a charming addition to herb gardens, balconies and containers, with flowers that attract bees and other beneficial insects.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade, ideally 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Benefits from afternoon shade during Malta’s warmer months.
💧 Watering: Water moderately, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging, especially during cooler weather.
🌱 Soil: Plant in light, well-draining soil. Chamomile tolerates relatively poor soils but grows well with a little added compost.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best in mild conditions, approximately 15°C–25°C. Excessive summer heat can shorten its flowering period.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 20–30 cm between plants for healthy growth and good air circulation.
🌾 Fertilizer: Requires minimal feeding. Excessive fertilizer can encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
✂️ Harvesting: Pick flower heads once fully open, preferably on a dry morning. Dry them thoroughly in a shaded, well-ventilated area before storing in an airtight container.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
Best planting season: October to March, when Malta’s cooler temperatures encourage healthy growth and flowering.
Position: Sunny herb gardens, raised beds, balconies or containers with good drainage. Provide afternoon shade as temperatures rise.
Companion plants: Calendula, coriander, dill and other flowering herbs that attract beneficial insects.
Common issue: Excessive heat and dry soil can cause wilting and premature decline. Maintain moderate moisture and protect plants from intense summer sunlight.
