Description
💧 Watering
Water moderately during the growing and flowering season (typically late winter through spring). The soil should stay moist but never waterlogged. As a bulb, it is highly susceptible to bulb rot if it sits in stagnant water. In Malta, the humid spring air means you should be careful not to overwater.
☀️ Light
Thrives in full sun to bright, indirect light. The flowers are famous for being “sun-sensitive”—they often close on cloudy days or in the late afternoon. To get the best blooms on a Maltese balcony, a south or east-facing spot is ideal.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Produces clumps of smooth, strap-like green leaves. The flower stalks emerge from the center, topped with clusters of star-shaped flowers (usually white with a dark center or bright orange). Once the flowering ends in late spring, the foliage will naturally yellow and die back as the plant enters dormancy.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a very well-draining, gritty mix. A standard potting soil amended with plenty of coarse sand or perlite is perfect. In Malta, adding some local “żrar” (fine gravel) to the bottom of the pot can help ensure the bulbs stay dry during heavy autumn rainstorms.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks while the plant is actively growing and flowering. Once the flowers fade and the leaves start to yellow, stop fertilizing and reduce watering to allow the bulb to rest.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Highly Toxic. All parts of the Ornithogalum (especially the bulbs) contain cardiac glycosides. Ingestion can lead to severe gastrointestinal upset, irregular heartbeat, and in some cases, it has been linked to irreversible blindness or death in dogs. Keep these well out of reach of pets.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Primarily an ornamental or garden plant. It is highly valued as a cut flower in Malta because its blooms can last in a vase for up to three weeks, significantly longer than most spring flowers.
