Description
💧 Watering
These are extremely thirsty plants; during the Maltese summer, they require deep, frequent watering to keep their massive leaves from drooping. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist, but provide good drainage to prevent the rhizomes from rotting during the wet winter season.
☀️ Light
It thrives in full sun to partial shade, but the large leaves are prone to shredding in strong winds. To keep the foliage looking pristine, place it in a sunny spot that is well-sheltered from the aggressive Gregale or Majjistral winds.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It is an incredibly fast grower, producing enormous, paddle-shaped bright green leaves that can grow several centimeters in a single day during peak season. While it may produce small cream flowers, the fruit is ornamental and not considered edible.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a very rich, fertile potting soil mixed with plenty of organic matter or well-rotted manure to fuel its rapid growth. Since it is a heavy feeder, a large pot with a stable base is essential to prevent this top-heavy plant from toppling.
🌿 Fertilizer
Bananas are “hungry” plants; apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season (March to October). Supplementing with potassium will help strengthen the “trunk” (pseudostem) and improve its resilience against heat stress.
✔🐕🐈 Pet Safety
The Musa basjoo is non-toxic to dogs, cats, and even horses, making it a perfectly safe way to add a dramatic tropical touch to a pet-friendly garden.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Due to the sheer size of its leaves, it is a magnificent air purifier that excels at oxygen production and increasing local humidity. It acts as a natural humidifier, making outdoor seating areas feel significantly cooler during dry Maltese afternoons.
