Description

💧 Watering
Water sparingly. Once established, French Lavender is highly drought-tolerant and handles the dry Maltese climate effortlessly. Always allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Be incredibly careful not to overwater, as damp or waterlogged roots will quickly kill this plant.

☀️ Light
It requires full, direct sunlight for at least six hours daily to maintain its compact shape and produce plenty of blooms. It absolutely loves the baking Mediterranean sun and performs wonderfully on exposed, open terraces and balconies.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
It grows into a neat, bushy mound of narrow, fragrant foliage that gives off a rich scent mixed with a hint of rosemary. Unlike English lavender, it has a much longer blooming season in warm climates. Prune it back by about one-third after a heavy flush of flowers to keep the bush tight and prevent it from becoming woody and sparse.

🪴 Potting Mix
Excellent drainage is mandatory. Use a gritty, lean potting mix—a standard soil blended with plenty of coarse sand, perlite, or gravel works best. It thrives naturally in poor, alkaline limestone conditions, making it perfectly suited for local garden soils.

🌿 Fertilizer
Requires almost no feeding. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers completely, as they will cause soft, leggy leaf growth with very few flowers. A tiny handful of organic compost or a very weak, low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring is more than enough.

⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic to pets. Lavender contains essential oils (including linalool) that are toxic to dogs and cats. While a casual sniff is perfectly safe, ingesting the foliage in large amounts can cause nausea, vomiting, and digestive upset.

🌬️ Air Purifying
While it doesn’t filter indoor chemicals, its highly fragrant foliage is a powerful outdoor aromatherapy tool that releases a soothing scent in the breeze. The flowers are also an absolute favorite for local bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators.
