Description
☀️ Light
Full Sun. This plant is a sun-lover through and through. It needs maximum light to keep its silver foliage dense and to produce those deep red buds. In Malta, it is perfect for hot, exposed balconies or rock gardens where other plants might wilt.
💧 Watering
Low. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant.
The Rule: Let the soil dry out almost completely between waterings.
The Malta Tip: It hates “wet feet” and high humidity around the roots. Ensure it is in a spot with good air circulation, especially during our humid winter months.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It forms a neat, compact mound about 30–40 cm high and wide. The leaves are covered in tiny white hairs (which give it that silver look), a natural defense against the intense Mediterranean sun.
🪴 Potting Mix
Gravelly and sharp-draining. Use a mix with plenty of sand, grit, or perlite. It loves the alkaline, limestone-based soils of Malta and will actually struggle in “rich” or peaty potting soils that stay damp for too long.
🌿 Fertilizer
Very little. A light feed with a balanced fertilizer in spring is enough. Over-fertilizing will result in leggy growth and fewer flowers.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Generally Safe. Most Helichrysum species are considered non-toxic to pets. However, the “Curry Plant” (Helichrysum italicum), which looks similar, can sometimes cause mild stomach upset if eaten in large quantities. ‘Red Jewel’ is usually safe, but it’s always best to discourage chewing.
