The Graptopetalum bellum (formerly known as Tacitus bellus) is widely considered the “crown jewel” of the succulent world. While most succulents are grown for their leaves, this one is famous for its spectacular, star-shaped, deep pink-to-magenta flowers that virtually explode from the plant in late spring.

Description

💧 Watering
Like most succulents, it follows the “soak and dry” rule. Water thoroughly, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. Be extremely careful not to get water trapped in the tight rosette of leaves, as this can cause rot—especially in the humid Maltese winter. In winter, water very sparingly, if at all.

☀️ Light
It prefers bright, indirect light. While it needs plenty of light to trigger those incredible blooms, it is more sensitive to intense sun than other Graptopetalums. In Malta, the direct afternoon sun in summer can “cook” its compact leaves. A spot with bright morning sun or filtered light under a pergola is its “happy place.”

🍃 Foliage / Growth
It forms a very low, flat, and tight rosette of dull-green to greyish triangular leaves. It is a slow grower and rarely gets larger than 10cm in diameter. Because it stays so close to the ground, it is perfect for small decorative pots or as a “filler” in a succulent arrangement.

🪴 Potting Mix
Drainage is non-negotiable. Use a specialist cactus and succulent mix with extra grit or perlite. It has a relatively shallow root system, so it thrives in shallow “azalea” style pots rather than deep containers.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed very lightly. Use a diluted succulent fertilizer once in early spring to give it the energy it needs to produce those massive flower stalks. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which can make the tight rosette “stretch” and lose its shape.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Graptopetalum bellum is non-toxic to dogs and cats. It is a very safe choice for a pet-friendly home, though its delicate leaves can snap off if a curious cat decides to bat at it. However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Like its succulent cousins, it contributes to indoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide. Because it is so compact and low-maintenance, it’s an ideal “desk companion” that adds a burst of life to a workspace without requiring much effort.
