Description
Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum) is a hardy deciduous shrub grown for its small, bright red-orange edible berries. Its tolerance of sunshine, heat, and relatively dry conditions makes it a good choice for Malta, where it can be grown in garden beds or large containers with adequate drainage.
💧 Watering
Water regularly while the plant is young and establishing, allowing the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, Goji Berry becomes fairly drought-tolerant, although regular deep watering during Malta’s hot, dry summers will encourage healthier growth and better fruit production. Avoid constantly wet or waterlogged soil.
☀️ Light
Grow in full sun for the best flowering and fruit production, ideally with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. It tolerates Malta’s strong sunshine well once established. Some light partial shade is tolerated, but plants grown with insufficient sunlight may produce fewer berries.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Goji Berry forms a vigorous, somewhat arching shrub with narrow green leaves. Small purple flowers develop into elongated red-orange berries during the growing season. The plant is deciduous, so leaf loss during the cooler months is normal.
Prune during winter or early spring to remove weak, damaged, or overcrowded stems and maintain an open, manageable shape. Light summer pruning can also help control long shoots.
🪴 Potting Mix
Plant in fertile, well-draining soil. Goji Berry adapts to a wide range of soil types and tolerates somewhat alkaline conditions, which is useful in Malta. For container growing, use a quality general-purpose potting mix with added perlite, pumice, or coarse material to improve drainage.
🌿 Fertilizer
Goji Berry has moderate feeding requirements. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or compost in early spring as new growth begins. Once flowering and fruiting start, avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of berry production.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Goji belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae), and reliable pet-safety information for the plant is limited. Although the ripe berries are edible for humans, it is best to prevent cats and dogs from chewing the leaves, stems, unripe fruit, or consuming large quantities of berries.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Goji Berry is primarily grown outdoors for its edible fruit and ornamental value rather than for specific air-purifying properties. Its flowers can also attract bees and other pollinating insects, adding further value to an edible or wildlife-friendly garden.
