Description
☀️ Light
Full Sun to Partial Shade. In Malta, it thrives in a sun-drenched spot. To get that massive explosion of yellow flowers, it needs at least 6 hours of direct sun. If it’s too shaded, the vine will become “thin” and stringy.
💧 Watering
Moderate. It likes regular watering while it’s establishing its root system.
The Mature Plant: Once established in the ground, it is surprisingly drought-tolerant.
In Pots: Don’t let it dry out completely during a hot “Sirocco” wind, or the leaves will crisp up.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It is an evergreen twining vine. It doesn’t have tendrils or suckers, so it needs a fence, trellis, or wires to wrap itself around. The leaves are narrow, glossy, and a beautiful dark green that sometimes turns a bronze-purple in a cold Maltese January.
🪴 Potting Mix
Adaptable. It prefers rich, well-draining soil but is quite tolerant of the slightly alkaline (limestone) soil common in Malta. If potting, use a large, deep container to give the roots room to roam.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds once it starts blooming, or you’ll get more leaves than flowers.
