Description
💧 Watering
Water when the top 3 cm of soil feels dry, usually every 7–10 days in the summer. During the humid Maltese winter, reduce watering significantly to avoid root rot, as the plant’s metabolism slows down.
☀️ Light
Thrives in very bright, indirect light which helps maintain its dense, bushy appearance. While it can handle some soft morning sun, the intense Maltese afternoon sun should be avoided to prevent leaf drop and scorching.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features thick, waxy, teardrop-shaped leaves that grow densely along upright stems. It is a moderate grower that can be easily pruned into a “lollipop” tree shape or kept as a thick, decorative bush.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a high-quality, well-draining potting soil enriched with perlite or pine bark. This ensures that the roots stay aerated, which is vital during our high-humidity weeks in autumn and winter.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month from March to September to support new growth. Using filtered water occasionally can help prevent the buildup of salts from the hard Maltese tap water.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
The milky sap (latex) found in the stems and leaves is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested and can cause skin irritation. Keep it in a spot where pets won’t be tempted to chew on the foliage.
🌬️ Air Purifying
An excellent air cleaner that is particularly effective at filtering out formaldehyde and other common household toxins. Its glossy leaves also help trap dust, keeping your indoor air feeling crisp and clean.
