Description
Fico d’India (Opuntia ficus-indica) is a hardy cactus with large, flat green pads and colourful edible fruits. Well suited to Malta’s Mediterranean climate, it thrives in sunny, dry conditions.
💧 Watering
Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Established plants are highly drought-tolerant and need very little water in winter.
☀️ Light
Requires full sun, ideally 6–8 hours daily. Thrives in Malta’s strong sunlight and summer heat.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Produces large, flat, fleshy pads with yellow or orange flowers followed by edible fruits. Can grow into a large, spreading cactus with age.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use sandy, well-draining cactus soil. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil, which can cause root rot.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed lightly in spring with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer. Established outdoor plants generally need little feeding.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Not generally considered poisonous to cats or dogs, but its spines and tiny glochids can cause painful injuries. Keep pets away from the plant.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Primarily valued for its edible fruits, drought tolerance, and ornamental appearance rather than indoor air purification.
