Description

The Eustoma russellianum ‘Bolero’, commonly known as Lisianthus, is the “supermodel” of the garden. The ‘Bolero’ series is particularly prized for its large, double-petaled blooms that look like a cross between a rose and a peony. In Malta, they are favorites for balconies and patios because they offer that delicate, high-end “florist look” while being surprisingly heat-tolerant.

💧 Watering
Lisianthus likes to stay hydrated but hates being “drowned.” Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. In the heat of a Maltese summer, they can be quite thirsty. A key tip: avoid getting water on the leaves or the petals, as this can lead to spotting or fungal issues in our humid evening air.

☀️ Light
They prefer full sun to very bright, indirect light. While they love the warmth, the ‘Bolero’ variety appreciates a bit of shelter from the most punishing midday sun in August to keep the blooms from “crisping.” A spot with plenty of morning sun is perfect.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
The ‘Bolero’ variety is bred to be more compact and sturdy than wild Lisianthus, making it ideal for pots. It features blue-green, slightly waxy leaves that provide a cool backdrop to the ruffled, romantic flowers. The stems are strong, but if the blooms get very large, they might appreciate a small decorative stake for support.

🪴 Potting Mix
They are a bit picky about their “feet.” They require a well-draining, rich potting mix with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH—which is lucky, as Maltese tap water and soil are naturally alkaline. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage to prevent “damping off.”

🌿 Fertilizer
These are hungry plants! To keep those “rose-like” flowers coming, use a high-potassium liquid fertilizer (like a tomato or flower feed) every two weeks during the growing season. This ensures the stems stay strong and the colors remain vivid.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Good news for pet owners! Eustoma is non-toxic to dogs and cats. It’s a safe way to get that “rose aesthetic” without the thorns or the toxicity concerns associated with other popular flowers. However, if you notice any signs of illness please consult a vet immediately.

🌬️ Air Purifying
While they are primarily grown for their stunning beauty, they contribute to a healthy outdoor ecosystem. Their deep cups are a treat for local pollinators, and their lush foliage helps maintain a little extra humidity on a dry Maltese terrace.
