Description
💧 Watering
Water moderately when the top 3cm of soil feels dry, ensuring the pot has excellent drainage to avoid “wet feet.” In the height of the Maltese summer, keep the soil consistently moist but be careful not to overwater during the more humid winter months.
☀️ Light
It thrives in bright, indirect light or partial shade, which helps maintain its vivid pink coloration without scorching. While it can handle some morning sun, the intense Maltese afternoon sun in mid-summer may bleach the vibrant foliage, so a sheltered spot is ideal.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This variety features long, lance-shaped leaves with a dark chocolate center and glowing pink margins. It grows on a central stem, eventually forming a small trunk, making it a perfect structural “thriller” for large decorative pots.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix amended with perlite or pumice to ensure aeration. Since it dislikes standing water, a slightly gritty mix helps mimic its preferred conditions and prevents root rot.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once in spring and once in mid-summer to support its colorful growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as too much nitrogen can sometimes cause the bright pink variegation to fade to a duller green.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Cordylines are toxic to dogs and cats if ingested, as they contain saponins which can cause drooling, vomiting, or lethargy. It is best placed on a raised pedestal or in an area where pets cannot nibble the trailing leaves.
🌬️ Air Purifying
It is a capable air purifier, helping to remove common household toxins like formaldehyde and xylene from the surrounding air. Its upright growth and large leaf surface area make it an efficient natural filter for outdoor lounge areas.
