Description
💧 Watering
While it is moderately drought-tolerant once established, it prefers regular watering when the top few centimeters of soil dry out, especially during the peak of summer. Avoid overwatering in winter, as it does not like to sit in soggy soil during Malta’s humid months.
☀️ Light
This plant loves full sun to partial shade and needs plenty of light to produce its beautiful flowers and fruit. It is exceptionally salt-tolerant, making it one of the best choices for coastal balconies and gardens across the islands.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It features thick, leathery, deep-green leaves and distinctive “Y” shaped thorns that make it an excellent natural security hedge. It has a compact, spreading habit and responds very well to shaping and pruning.
🪴 Potting Mix
A well-draining, sandy or gritty potting mix is ideal to mimic its coastal origins. Ensure the container has plenty of drainage holes, as stagnant water at the roots is the quickest way to damage this hardy shrub.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again in late summer to encourage blooming. A fertilizer slightly higher in potassium will help promote better fruiting and overall plant health.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
The ripe fruit is edible, but the rest of the plant, including the leaves, stems, and unripe berries, is toxic if ingested. Additionally, the sharp thorns can be a physical hazard, so it should be placed away from areas where pets play.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Its dense, waxy foliage is great at trapping dust and sea salt particles, helping to keep the air on your terrace fresh. Like most evergreens, it is effective at absorbing CO2 and releasing oxygen year-round.
