💧 Watering
Camellias like to be consistently moist but never waterlogged.
The Malta Challenge: Since our tap water is “hard” (full of calcium), watering your Camellia directly from the tap will eventually turn the leaves yellow (chlorosis).
The Fix: Use rainwater whenever possible, or let tap water sit for 24 hours and add a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar to help neutralize the pH.

☀️ Light
In Malta, Camellias must be treated as shade plants. They love bright, indirect light or “dappled” shade (like the light under a large tree). A north-facing courtyard or a shaded balcony is perfect.
Avoid the morning sun: If dew settles on the petals and the morning sun hits them too quickly, it can “burn” the flowers, causing them to turn brown and drop.

🪴 Potting & Soil
Because of Malta’s alkaline soil, it is highly recommended to grow Camellias in pots rather than in the ground.
Soil: You must use Ericaceous (acidic) compost. This is widely available in Maltese garden centers.
Potting: Ensure the pot has excellent drainage. Camellias have shallow roots and hate “wet feet,” which can cause root rot.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed your Camellia with a specialized Ericaceous fertilizer (acid-loving plant food) during the spring and summer after the flowers have faded. This is when the plant is busy growing new leaves and setting the buds for next winter.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Safe! Camellias are non-toxic to cats, dogs, and even horses. They are a perfectly safe addition to a pet-friendly Maltese home.

However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
