Description

The Calibrachoa, universally known as Million Bells, is a sensational, fast-growing evergreen perennial typically grown as an annual. It looks like a miniature petunia on overdrive, producing hundreds of small, bell-shaped flowers in an incredible spectrum of bright solids, stripes, and multi-colored throats all through the warm months.

💧 Watering
Water thoroughly whenever the top 3 centimeters of soil feel dry. While they love moisture to fuel their non-stop blooming, they absolutely hate soggy roots. Ensure excellent drainage so they never sit in stagnant water. In the heat of a Maltese summer, potted hanging baskets may need daily morning watering.

☀️ Light
They demand full, direct sunlight to maximize their incredible flower production. They need at least six hours of blazing sun daily. If they are placed in too much shade, blooming will quickly slow down and the plant will become leggy and sparse.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
They have a compact, mounding, and trailing habit, featuring small, narrow, oval green leaves that feel slightly sticky. Unlike traditional petunias, Calibrachoa is self-cleaning, meaning the old flowers drop off naturally without you needing to deadhead them. If the trailing stems get too long or look tired mid-season, cut them back by half to stimulate a fresh, bushy flush of growth.

🪴 Potting Mix
They are highly sensitive to soil pH and require a slightly acidic to neutral potting mix (pH 5.5 to 6.5) to properly absorb iron. Since Malta’s natural soil and tap water are highly alkaline, they should only be grown in containers using a premium, peat-based potting soil mixed with perlite for sharp drainage.

🌿 Fertilizer
They are exceptionally heavy feeders because they bloom continuously. Apply a liquid, iron-rich fertilizer balanced for flowering plants every one to two weeks during spring and summer. If the leaves start turning a pale yellow while the veins stay green, it is a clear sign of iron deficiency caused by alkaline water; treat it immediately with chelated iron.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety***
Great news for pet owners—Calibrachoa is completely non-toxic to dogs and cats. They are perfectly safe to hang on balconies or place on sunny patios where curious pets might wander.

🌬️ Air Purifying
While they are not heavy indoor air purifiers, their dense, cascading growth is perfect for adding vibrant, living color walls to outdoor spaces, providing a cheerful nectar source for passing butterflies and bees.
