The Brighamia insignis, widely known as the Hawaiian Palm or Alula, is an extraordinarily rare, critically endangered succulent native to the sea cliffs of Kauai, Hawaii. Looking like a quirky cross between a miniature palm tree and a cabbage, it features a thick, bulbous trunk topped with a crown of bright green leaves, producing fragrant, starry yellow flowers in winter.

Description

💧 Watering
Water thoroughly only when the potting mix has completely dried out. The thick, fleshy trunk stores water efficiently, making it highly susceptible to rot if overwatered. During its summer rest period, scale back watering significantly. Always empty the drainage saucer so the roots never sit in stagnant water.

☀️ Light
It thrives in bright, indirect light indoors, or partial shade if placed outside. While it loves a bright spot to maintain its compact form, direct mid-summer Mediterranean sun can easily scorch its tender leaves. A position with plenty of bright, ambient light is ideal.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
It grows as a caudiciform plant, meaning it forms a thick, water-storing stem or trunk. A rosette of fleshy, rounded leaves sits strictly at the top of this trunk. As the plant grows taller, older lower leaves naturally turn yellow and drop off, leaving a beautiful textured pattern on the bark. In winter, it produces delicate, trumpet-shaped yellow blossoms that smell sweetly of citrus.

🪴 Potting Mix
Superb, sharp drainage is an absolute necessity. Use a premium cactus and succulent mix heavily modified with perlite, pumice, or coarse sand. It prefers being slightly root-bound, so choose a relatively small container with plenty of drainage holes.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed very lightly to protect its sensitive root system. Apply a half-strength succulent fertilizer once a month during its active growing seasons in spring and autumn. Do not feed during the hot summer dormant period.

⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic to pets. While actual data is limited due to its extreme rarity, the Brighamia insignis belongs to the Campanulaceae family, and its milky sap contains alkaloids that can cause moderate digestive upset, vomiting, or skin irritation if chewed or punctured by pets. Keep it safely elevated out of reach.

🌬️ Air Purifying
While it doesn’t process large volumes of indoor chemicals, it acts as a phenomenal conversation starter and structural focal piece. It transpires moisture mildly, helping to break up the dry air commonly caused by indoor air conditioners.
