💧 Watering
Sea Thrift is incredibly drought-tolerant once its deep taproot is established. Water it thoroughly when planting, but once established, allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, Malta’s natural rainfall is more than enough. Its biggest enemy is overwatering; soggy soil will cause the center of the cushion-like mound to rot and die out.

☀️ Light
It demands full sun. It needs all the direct sunlight it can get to keep its foliage compact and to trigger a heavy flush of blooms. If planted in partial shade, the grassy mound will become loose, floppy, and fail to produce those iconic globe flowers. It shrugs off the intense, reflective heat of Maltese limestone patios beautifully.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features dense, low-growing tufts of narrow, dark green leaves that look exactly like a small patch of lawn grass. In spring and early summer, sturdy leafless stems rise about 15–20cm above the foliage, bearing compact, pom-pom-like flower heads. It grows slowly but forms a very tidy, neat cushion that acts as an excellent border edge.

🪴 Potting Mix
It actively prefers poor, lean, and sandy or gritty soil. Do not plant it in rich, organic compost, as this will actually cause the plant to grow too fast, become weak, and split open in the middle. For pots or rock gardens, mix standard potting soil with a heavy amount of coarse sand, perlite, or fine gravel. It loves alkaline conditions, making it perfectly adapted to local Maltese soil.

🌿 Fertilizer
Strictly do not over-fertilize. Sea Thrift is adapted to nutrient-deficient cliff faces. A very light, diluted dose of a balanced fertilizer at the start of spring is all it will ever need. Excessive feeding ruins its compact shape and reduces flowering.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety**
Armeria maritima is completely non-toxic to dogs and cats. It is a wonderfully safe, worry-free choice for ground-level garden borders, pathway edging, or low balcony pots where pets frequently roam.

🌬️ Air Purifying
While it is an outdoor plant that doesn’t filter indoor air, it is a fantastic tool for soil stabilization in windy coastal gardens. Furthermore, its early spring blooms provide an invaluable, accessible nectar source for local Maltese bees and pollinators just as they emerge for the season.
