Description

Adenium obesum, commonly known as the Desert Rose, is a striking succulent shrub admired for its swollen trunk, sculptural form, and spectacular trumpet-shaped flowers. Exceptionally well suited to Malta’s warm, sunny climate, it thrives in containers and requires very little maintenance once established.

💧 Watering
Water thoroughly, then allow the potting mix to dry out completely before watering again. During Malta’s hot summer months, water more frequently as the plant actively grows and flowers. Greatly reduce watering in autumn and winter, especially if the plant becomes dormant.

☀️ Light
Desert Rose thrives in full sun and requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. A bright, sunny location is essential for compact growth and abundant flowering.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This slow-growing succulent develops a thick, swollen trunk (caudex) that stores water, along with glossy green leaves and showy flowers in shades of pink, red, white, or bi-colours. It may lose some or all of its leaves during winter dormancy before producing fresh growth in spring.

🪴 Potting Mix
Use a very free-draining cactus or succulent potting mix with added coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Excellent drainage is essential, as Adenium is highly susceptible to root rot if left in wet soil.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 3–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for flowering succulents. Stop feeding during winter dormancy when growth slows or stops.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Adenium obesum is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Its milky sap contains cardiac glycosides and may also cause skin irritation. Wear gloves when pruning or repotting, and keep the plant out of reach of pets and children.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Desert Rose is grown for its dramatic appearance and colourful flowers rather than its air-purifying qualities. Its unique form makes it an outstanding feature plant for sunny patios, balconies, and Mediterranean gardens.
