Description
Calabrese Sprouting Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica), known in Italian as Cavolo Broccolo Ramoso Calabrese, is a traditional Italian vegetable variety prized for its vigorous growth and abundant harvests. It produces a central green broccoli head followed by numerous smaller side shoots, allowing for repeated harvesting throughout the growing season.
With its tender texture and delicious, slightly sweet flavour, Calabrese Broccoli is perfect for steaming, roasting, soups, pasta dishes and stir-fries. Its excellent regrowth makes it a productive choice for home vegetable gardens.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Prefers full sun, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering is particularly important during head development.
🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 15°C–22°C. Excessive heat can cause flower buds to open prematurely.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 50–60 cm between plants for healthy growth and good air circulation.
🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth, following product instructions.
✂️ Harvesting: Harvest the central head when firm and compact, before the flower buds open. Leave the plant growing to produce additional smaller side shoots. The first harvest is typically ready 70–80 days after transplanting.
