Description
Green Leaf Swiss Chard (Beta vulgaris var. cicla), known in Italian as Bietola Verde da Taglio, is a productive leafy vegetable prized for its tender, bright green leaves and delicate stalks. Unlike varieties grown primarily for their thick stems, this type is cultivated for its abundant foliage and excellent regrowth after cutting.
Perfect for sautéing with garlic and olive oil, soups, pasta dishes and traditional Mediterranean recipes, Green Leaf Swiss Chard has a mild, earthy flavour similar to spinach. Its continuous leaf production makes it an excellent choice for home vegetable gardens.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Prefers 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Benefits from partial afternoon shade during Malta’s hot summer months.
💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly during warm, dry periods to encourage tender leaves.
🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 10°C–25°C. Tolerates mild winter conditions and some summer heat when adequately watered.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 20–30 cm between plants for healthy leaf development and good air circulation.
🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth, following product instructions.
✂️ Harvesting: Harvest outer leaves when they reach a suitable size, leaving the central growing point intact. Young leaves can generally be harvested around 30–50 days after transplanting, depending on growing conditions. Regular cutting encourages fresh growth.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
Best planting season: September to April, although established plants can continue producing leaves into summer with adequate watering and afternoon shade.
Position: Sunny vegetable gardens, raised beds or large containers. Provide protection from intense afternoon sun during warmer months.
Companion plants: Lettuce, onions, carrots and radishes.
Common issue: Leaf miners can create pale, winding trails or blotches inside the leaves. Remove affected leaves and use insect netting when necessary.
