Description
Dill (Anethum graveolens), known in Italian as Aneto, is a fragrant culinary herb prized for its delicate, feathery green leaves and distinctive fresh, slightly sweet flavour. This fast-growing annual produces attractive yellow flower clusters that attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.
Widely used in Mediterranean and European cuisine, dill is perfect for seasoning fish, seafood, potatoes, salads, pickles, sauces and yoghurt-based dips. Both its leaves and seeds are used in cooking, making it a versatile addition to kitchen herb gardens, balconies and containers.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Prefers full sun, with at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Benefits from light afternoon shade during Malta’s warmer months.
💧 Watering: Keep soil moderately moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly during establishment and dry periods.
🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with a little compost. Avoid heavy, waterlogged conditions.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 15°C–25°C. Excessive summer heat can encourage premature flowering and reduce leaf production.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 20–30 cm between plants for healthy growth and good air circulation.
🌾 Fertilizer: Requires minimal feeding. Apply a light, balanced organic fertilizer every 4–6 weeks if necessary.
✂️ Harvesting: Snip fresh leaves as needed, preferably before flowering for the best flavour. Allow some flowers to develop if harvesting seeds. Dill has a delicate taproot, so avoid disturbing established plants.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
Best planting season: September to April, when temperatures are cooler and more suitable for healthy leaf production.
Position: Sunny herb gardens, raised beds or deep containers. Provide afternoon shade during warmer periods and protection from strong winds.
Companion plants: Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce. Its flowers also attract beneficial insects.
Common issue: Premature flowering (bolting) can occur during hot weather, reducing leaf production. Maintain consistent watering and grow during Malta’s cooler months.
