Description
Round Red Radish (Raphanus sativus), known in Italian as Ravanello Tondo Rosso, is a fast-growing root vegetable prized for its bright red, rounded roots and crisp white flesh. With its refreshing, mildly peppery flavour, radishes are an excellent choice for home vegetable gardens.
Perfect for fresh salads, sandwiches, garnishes and pickling, Round Red Radishes are easy to grow and quick to harvest. Their compact size also makes them ideal for raised beds and containers, providing fresh vegetables in just a few weeks.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Prefers 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Benefits from partial afternoon shade during warmer weather.
💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Irregular watering can cause roots to split or become tough and excessively spicy.
🌱 Soil: Plant in loose, fertile, well-draining soil free from stones. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages leaf growth rather than root development.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 10°C–20°C. Excessive heat can cause premature flowering and poor root development.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 5–8 cm between plants and 15–20 cm between rows for proper root development.
🌾 Fertilizer: Generally requires little additional feeding when grown in fertile soil. Avoid excessive nitrogen-rich fertilizers.
✂️ Harvesting: Harvest when the rounded roots are firm and approximately 2–4 cm in diameter. Most small round varieties mature around 25–40 days after sowing, depending on growing conditions.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
Best planting season: September to April, when temperatures are cooler and more suitable for root development.
Position: Sunny vegetable gardens, raised beds or containers with loose, well-draining soil. Provide afternoon shade during warmer periods.
Companion plants: Lettuce, carrots, peas and spinach.
Common issue: Hot weather and irregular watering can cause radishes to become woody, hollow or excessively spicy. Maintain consistent moisture and harvest promptly when mature.
