Description
Kiwi ‘Issai’ (Actinidia arguta) is a compact, vigorous climbing vine that produces small, sweet kiwi fruits with smooth, edible skin. Unlike most kiwi varieties, ‘Issai’ is self-fertile, so a separate male pollinator is not essential, making it particularly useful where growing space is limited.
💧 Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist during active growth, particularly while the plant is young and establishing. Hardy Kiwi does not tolerate prolonged drought well, so regular deep watering is especially important during Malta’s hot, dry spring and summer months. Mulching around the root zone can help conserve moisture and keep the roots cooler.
☀️ Light
Grow in full sun to partial shade. In Malta, morning sun with some protection from the strongest afternoon summer heat is preferable, particularly for young or container-grown plants. Adequate sunlight is still important for flowering and fruit development.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
‘Issai’ is a deciduous climbing vine producing attractive green foliage, small fragrant flowers, and smooth-skinned green fruits. The fruits are much smaller than traditional fuzzy kiwis and can be eaten whole without peeling.
Although more compact than many kiwi vines, ‘Issai’ is still a vigorous climber and should be provided with a strong trellis, pergola, or wire support. Regular pruning helps control its size, improves airflow, and maintains productive fruiting growth.
🪴 Potting Mix
Plant in fertile, organic-rich, well-draining soil that retains consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged. Hardy Kiwi generally prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil. Malta’s highly calcareous soils may therefore need improvement with plenty of organic matter, particularly if the plant shows signs of nutrient deficiency.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins. An additional light feeding during the growing season can support healthy growth and fruit production. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous foliage at the expense of flowers and fruit.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Actinidia vines are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Cats can sometimes be strongly attracted to Kiwi vines and may rub against, chew, or damage the stems and roots. Young plants may therefore need protection where cats have access to the growing area.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Kiwi ‘Issai’ is primarily valued as an edible fruiting climber rather than for specific air-purifying properties. Its vigorous leafy growth can provide attractive summer greenery and natural shade when trained over a suitable structure, while its deciduous habit allows more sunlight through during winter.
