Grapevine (Vitis vinifera)
Vitis vinifera, commonly known as Grapevine, is a vigorous deciduous climber grown for its attractive foliage and bunches of edible grapes. Perfectly at home in Mediterranean conditions, it is an excellent choice for Maltese gardens, where it can be trained over pergolas, trellises, fences, and other sturdy supports.
💧 Watering
Water young vines regularly while their root system becomes established. Mature Grapevines are relatively drought-tolerant, but deep watering during Malta’s prolonged hot, dry summers supports healthy growth and fruit development. Allow the upper soil to dry between waterings and avoid constantly wet conditions, particularly around established plants.
☀️ Light
Plant in full sun, ideally with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. A warm, sunny position encourages strong growth, healthy fruit development, and sweeter, better-ripened grapes. Good airflow around the foliage is also beneficial.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Grapevines are vigorous climbing plants that produce large, lobed green leaves and long shoots equipped with tendrils. Small flowers develop into bunches of grapes during the growing season, with the fruit’s colour, size, and flavour depending on the variety. The foliage naturally yellows and falls during autumn and winter before new growth emerges in spring. Annual winter pruning is important for controlling the vine and encouraging productive new growth.
🪴 Potting Mix
Grow in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Grapevines adapt to a range of soil types but dislike prolonged waterlogging. They can also be grown in large containers, provided there is plenty of room for the roots and excellent drainage.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted compost in early spring as growth begins. Once fruit starts developing, a feed with good potassium levels can support fruit formation and ripening. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous leafy growth at the expense of grape production.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Grapes and raisins are highly toxic to dogs and can cause potentially life-threatening kidney injury, even when the amount eaten appears small. Dogs should never be allowed access to fallen or harvested grapes. The risk is primarily associated with the fruit rather than the ornamental value of the vine. For cats, grape toxicity is less clearly established, but ingestion should still be prevented.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Grapevines are primarily valued for their edible fruit, ornamental foliage, and ability to provide natural summer shade rather than for specific air-purifying properties. When trained over a pergola, the deciduous canopy can provide welcome shade during Malta’s summer while allowing more sunlight through after the leaves fall in winter.
