Frankenia laevis (Sea Heath)
Frankenia laevis, commonly known as Sea Heath, is a low-growing evergreen perennial that forms dense mats of fine green foliage dotted with tiny pink to lilac flowers. Naturally found in coastal and salty environments, it is particularly well suited to Malta’s dry Mediterranean climate and is an excellent choice for rock gardens, ground cover, coastal planting, and sunny containers.
💧 Watering
Water regularly while the plant is establishing, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, Frankenia laevis is drought-tolerant and requires relatively little additional water. Occasional deep watering during Malta’s prolonged summer drought will help maintain healthy growth, particularly in containers.
☀️ Light
Grow in full sun for the densest growth and best flowering. It tolerates Malta’s strong summer sunshine and exposed coastal conditions very well. Some light shade is tolerated, but growth may become less compact.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This low, spreading plant develops slender branching stems covered with tiny green leaves, forming a dense carpet close to the ground. Small pink to lilac flowers appear among the foliage during the warmer months. The foliage may develop reddish or bronze tones when exposed to drought, cold, or salty conditions. Light trimming can help maintain a neat, compact appearance.
🪴 Potting Mix
Plant in light, well-draining soil. Frankenia is particularly tolerant of sandy, relatively poor, and saline soils, making it useful for difficult coastal locations. For containers, use a free-draining mix with added coarse sand, pumice, or perlite and ensure excess water can escape easily.
🌿 Fertilizer
Frankenia laevis has very low nutrient requirements and generally needs little additional feeding. A light application of balanced fertilizer in spring is sufficient for container-grown plants. Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can encourage softer, less compact growth.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Reliable information specifically regarding the toxicity of Frankenia laevis to cats and dogs is limited. As a precaution, pets should be discouraged from chewing or consuming significant amounts of the plant.

Frankenia laevis is primarily valued as an outdoor ground-cover and coastal plant rather than for air-purifying properties. Its excellent tolerance of salt spray, drought, and exposed conditions makes it especially useful for low-maintenance and coastal gardens in Malta.
