Euphorbia × lomi

Euphorbia × lomi is an attractive flowering succulent closely related to the Crown of Thorns, prized for its compact growth, thorny stems, and colourful, long-lasting flower bracts. Its love of warmth, sunshine, and relatively dry conditions makes it particularly well suited to Malta, both in containers and sunny, sheltered outdoor positions.

💧 Watering

Water thoroughly, then allow the potting mix to dry well before watering again. Euphorbia × lomi is drought-tolerant and much more sensitive to overwatering than underwatering. During Malta’s hot summer months it may need more frequent watering, particularly in containers, while watering should be greatly reduced during winter.

☀️ Light

Grow in a very bright position with plenty of direct sunlight. Several hours of sun each day encourage compact growth and abundant flowering. It handles Malta’s sunshine well, although plants moved from shaded conditions should be introduced to intense summer sun gradually to prevent scorching.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

This compact, branching succulent develops thick, thorny stems with green leaves concentrated towards the growing tips. Small true flowers are surrounded by colourful bracts, which may occur in shades of red, pink, yellow, orange, cream, or combinations depending on the cultivar. Light pruning can maintain a bushy shape, but take care around both the thorns and milky sap.

🪴 Potting Mix

Use a very well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Adding pumice, perlite, or coarse grit will further improve drainage and reduce the risk of root rot. Always grow container plants in pots with adequate drainage holes.

🌿 Fertilizer

Feed lightly every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for flowering succulents. Avoid excessive feeding, which can encourage weak growth. Reduce or stop fertilizing during the cooler months when growth slows.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Euphorbia × lomi is toxic to cats and dogs. Like other Euphorbias, it produces a milky latex sap that can cause significant irritation to the mouth, skin, and eyes, while ingestion may cause drooling, vomiting, and gastrointestinal upset. Keep it out of reach of pets and children, and wear gloves when pruning or repotting.

Euphorbia × lomi is primarily valued for its colourful flowers, sculptural growth, and excellent tolerance of warm, dry conditions rather than for proven air-purifying properties. Its long-lasting blooms make it an attractive feature for sunny balconies, terraces, and garden displays.
