Description

Dieffenbachia seguine ‘Caiman’ is an attractive tropical houseplant valued for its large, beautifully patterned foliage and lush, upright growth. It enjoys Malta’s warmth but is best kept indoors in bright, indirect light, where its dramatic leaves make an excellent statement.

💧 Watering

Water when the top 2–3cm of the potting mix feels dry, keeping the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. During Malta’s hot summer months, check the soil more frequently, while watering should be reduced in winter. Avoid leaving water standing in the saucer or decorative pot.

☀️ Light

Grow in bright, indirect light for healthy growth and attractive foliage. It can tolerate medium light, although growth may become slower and leaf colouring less pronounced. Protect it from Malta’s strong direct summer sunlight, particularly behind glass, as this can scorch or bleach the leaves.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

‘Caiman’ develops broad, decorative leaves on sturdy upright stems, gradually forming a full and tropical-looking plant. Warm conditions and moderate humidity help maintain healthy foliage. Remove older yellowing leaves from the base as necessary and rotate the pot occasionally to encourage balanced growth.

🪴 Potting Mix

Use a fertile, airy, well-draining indoor potting mix that retains some moisture. A combination of quality houseplant compost, perlite, and orchid bark works particularly well. Always choose a container with adequate drainage holes to reduce the risk of root rot.

🌿 Fertilizer

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Dieffenbachia is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause intense irritation and swelling of the mouth, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Its sap can also irritate the skin, so keep the plant away from pets and young children and wear gloves when pruning.

🌬️ Air Purifying

Dieffenbachia is often described as an air-purifying houseplant because laboratory studies have shown that plants can absorb certain airborne compounds. In normal indoor environments, however, ‘Caiman’ is best valued for its abundant decorative foliage rather than relied upon as a substitute for ventilation or air filtration.
