Description

Lavandula stoechas, commonly known as Spanish Lavender or Butterfly Lavender, is an aromatic evergreen shrub easily recognised by the colourful petal-like bracts that sit above its purple flower heads. Naturally adapted to Mediterranean conditions, it is an excellent choice for Malta’s sunny gardens, rockeries, borders, and containers.

💧 Watering

Water regularly while the plant is establishing, then allow the soil to dry well between waterings. Once established, Lavandula stoechas is highly drought-tolerant. Container-grown plants will need more frequent watering during Malta’s hottest summer months, but constantly wet soil should be avoided as this can quickly cause root problems.

☀️ Light

Grow in full sun, ideally with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. It thrives in Malta’s strong sunshine and warm temperatures. A sunny, open position with good air circulation encourages compact growth, healthy foliage, and abundant flowering.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

This compact, bushy shrub produces narrow, aromatic grey-green leaves and distinctive purple flower heads topped by prominent butterfly-like bracts. Flowering is particularly abundant during spring and may continue intermittently into the warmer months. Deadhead spent flowers and lightly prune after the main flowering period to encourage a dense shape and further blooms. Avoid cutting deeply into old, leafless wood.

🪴 Potting Mix

Plant in light, very well-draining soil. Lavandula stoechas generally prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions and is less tolerant of highly alkaline soils than some other lavender species. For containers, use a free-draining mix amended with perlite, pumice, or coarse grit.

🌿 Fertilizer

Lavandula stoechas has low nutrient requirements. A light application of balanced fertilizer or compost in spring is generally sufficient. Avoid excessive feeding, particularly high-nitrogen fertilizers, as these can encourage soft leafy growth while reducing flowering and fragrance.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Lavender contains aromatic compounds that can cause gastrointestinal upset if consumed in sufficient quantities and is best kept away from cats and dogs that regularly chew plants. Concentrated lavender essential oils present a significantly greater risk to pets than the living plant.

🌬️ Air Purifying

Lavandula stoechas is primarily valued for its fragrance, ornamental foliage, and distinctive flowers rather than for proven air-purifying properties. Its nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators, making it particularly valuable in a wildlife-friendly Maltese garden.
