Description

Lavandula dentata, commonly known as French Lavender or Fringed Lavender, is an aromatic evergreen shrub recognised by its softly toothed, grey-green leaves and attractive purple flower spikes. Well adapted to warm Mediterranean conditions, it is an excellent choice for sunny Maltese gardens, borders, rock gardens, and containers.

💧 Watering
Water regularly while the plant is establishing, then allow the soil to dry well between waterings. Once established, Lavandula dentata is drought-tolerant and needs relatively little additional water. Container-grown plants will require more frequent watering during Malta’s hottest months, but avoid keeping the soil constantly moist.

☀️ Light
Plant in full sun, ideally where it receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. It tolerates Malta’s strong sunshine and summer heat very well when established. A sunny, open position with good air circulation encourages compact growth and abundant flowering.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This bushy evergreen shrub produces aromatic grey-green leaves with distinctive finely toothed edges. Purple flower spikes topped with decorative bracts can appear over a long period in mild climates such as Malta’s, with particularly strong displays during spring and the cooler growing months. Remove faded flowers and lightly prune to maintain a dense, rounded shape, avoiding severe cuts into old, leafless wood.

🪴 Potting Mix
Use light, very well-draining soil. A Mediterranean herb mix or general potting mix amended with coarse grit, pumice, or perlite works well in containers. Good drainage is essential, as prolonged wet conditions can quickly lead to root problems.

🌿 Fertilizer
Lavandula dentata has low nutrient requirements. A light application of balanced fertilizer or compost in spring is generally sufficient. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce soft leafy growth while reducing flowering and fragrance.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Lavender contains aromatic compounds that can cause problems if consumed in sufficient quantities and is best kept away from cats and dogs that are likely to chew plants. Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal upset. Concentrated lavender essential oils pose a significantly greater risk to pets than the living plant.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Lavandula dentata is primarily valued for its aromatic foliage and flowers rather than for proven air-purifying properties. Its long flowering period provides an excellent nectar source for bees and other beneficial pollinators, making it a valuable addition to a wildlife-friendly Maltese garden.
